Confederate States of America Big Six Type Banknote Set

In 1861, eleven states seceded from the Union and formed the Confederate States of America. In order to finance the Southern war effort, the Confederate government issued banknotes, commonly referred to as "Greybacks," in denominations ranging from 50 cents to $1000. As the Civil War dragged on, they continued to produce increasing numbers of Greybacks, which led to steep inflation rates and a loss of confidence in the rebel currency. By 1864, many believed these banknotes to be worthless, and the Greybacks were abandoned for the use of Northern Greenbacks or bartering. Luckily for collectors, not all of these banknotes were destroyed after the Confederate Army finally surrendered in 1865.

Examples of Greybacks still exist today, but none are as rare and valuable as the "Big Six." These six notes are important glimpses into our past that are highly coveted by collectors and are now virtually unattainable:
