Affectionately known as "Ike," Dwight D. Eisenhower served his country with distinction as a soldier and statesman. Upon graduation from the United States Military Academy at West Point, NY, in 1915, Eisenhower embarked on a long, successful career as a military officer. After being named Supreme Allied Commander in Europe in December 1943, General Eisenhower was instrumental in the planning and execution of the D-Day Invasion that ultimately led to the defeat of the Germans during World War II.
Eisenhower capitalized on his enormous popularity to mount a successful presidential campaign in 1952. He was also re-elected by a landslide in 1956. Among President Eisenhower's most notable accomplishments were the sponsoring of the Federal Aid and Highway Act of 1956 that led to the construction of the nation's first interstate highway system, balancing the federal budget on three separate occasions, and helping the United States remain at peace during the Cold War.
